Hi Cult <3 I’m writing to you from the sky, my most introspective and disciplined place (when JetBlue’s WiFi is working, that is). There is a lot of sexy news to unwrap around events, talent partnerships and brand opportunities – so grab your oat milk draft latte or spritz.
I’m en route to LA for a shoot with W Magazine, featuring two iconic R&B artists and a luxury car brand. At the risk of that sounding painfully vague, when this goes live trust that The Front Desk community will be the first to hear/see/watch ;) This morning, as I was stuffing every miniature moisturizer I own into a Tumi carry-on I found in my parent’s basement, I realized that I have been in New York for over two weeks… and I’m alive. Since calling Palm Beach home, I split my time in NY between Manhattan and Long Island – and with intentional scheduling and boundary setting, was able to bounce back and forth between the two without a hitch. I even got to see my sister who came in from Boston, and whom we love!! I always know when she’s coming home because our mother stocks the house with tiny corn muffins and yummy body wash and tampons. (Mom, if you’re reading this, I also enjoy corn muffins.)
Overall, it’s been a lovely trip – from interviewing Miranda Kerr to dying my hair red (shout out to Liv Casanova at IGK who is the only soul I would trust with this feat) and checking out the all-new NYLON office, I feel very whole and lovey and nourished.
On that note, let’s dive into the wonderful world of Magazine Media and how we can all work & play together.
NYLON COACHELLA & STAGECOACH
Tomorrow is the DROPDEAD date for invites (internally) so if you have a client or a friend or a chic aunt you want to get on the list, tonight is the night to hit me up. Emails with links to social handles are preferred. Yes, consider me a Digital Doorgirl. cc: samantha.nik@bustle.com
NYLON EVENT DATE REMINDERS
NYLON House Coachella – Friday April 11th, Palm Springs
NYLON House Stagecoach aka Desert Disco – Friday April 25th, Palm Springs
BRAND OPPORTUNITIES
There is still opportunity for brand sponsorship at our NYLON x Stagecoach party, themed Desert Disco, which is exactly what you think: western country meets- sexy chic NYLON vibes. I can’t f*cking wait – the design, activations, bar, and MUSIC TALENT is off the charts. There will also be boozy ice cream popsicles that I’m particularly psyched about because as we all know, no food = no fun.
Dear PR friends,
If you have brands that are interested in activating during Stagecoach weekend in a styled, innovative way at NYLON House (and at a custom rate since it is fast approaching) let me know – anything beauty, wellness, food & bev, or fashion :)
P.S. Activities preferred! Something we can do with our hands alla Bustle B. Happy style (does anyone remember the iconic DairyBoy Denim Bar or when I made us all frost donuts with Coconut Oil Lube?) Good times.
Talent & Edit Updates Du Jour
I felt compelled to make a PSA about this last week, but Julia told me to pop my magnesium pills and take a breath lol which I am glad she did – but I still feel this is an important topic to discuss!
PSA No. 1
For editorial interviews, I prefer IRL, as do we all – but I am especially strict about this when I am traveling now that my main squeeze is Palm Beach. If I am in LA or NYC, I prioritize in-person connections – not only because it brings humanity back to life, but because it always serves for a better feature.
Like, sometimes the story of how you met your husband waiting in line at Whole Foods or where your secret lip filler expert lives doesn’t come up over Zoom, you know?
PSA No. 2
I see a bunch of TFD readers are new to the industry or recent graduates, so this could be useful intel on how our businesses work with one another:
Publicists are scoped by their clients (brands or people) oftentimes on a retainer, oftentimes with monthly minimum commitments. Although coverage is hardly ever “guaranteed” in a scope, it is obviously what the team is hoping and working for, with all different kinds of goals and impressions to hit each month. The publicist works for the client.
Editors on the other hand, work for a publication – although it can sometimes feel like we’re at the hands of publicists LOL. I just popped into LinkedIn and saw that my dear friend & founder Emily Blair shared this post and it’s spot on – I highly recommend this approach to relationship building, whether you are new on the PR side of the desk or have been in the mix for decades.
Net Net, PR and Editorial are the ultimate besties. PB & J. Happier Grocery and a blonde 22-year-old in the West Village. We can’t do our work without one another, and building relationships with partners who you genuinely believe in – from the clients they choose to work with, to their literal vibe in the room – is how to win at this game. Especially as women, let’s support each other plz!
Agent Friends: God love ya. I recently did a deal with a manager x agent x talent triangle and you can definitely feel when there are a lot of cooks in the kitchen. Currently noodling on some ways we can build better systems around brand partnerships and the players involved, while also prioritizing the talent and brand relationship which is ultimately what is best for both worlds in the long-term.
Would you guys be interested in a Reel or TFD TV moment on the difference between talent managers and talent agents, and what it looks like when an influencer has both?
Last but not least, I’ll leave you with three bylines that I’m super proud of that launched recently –
For the girl who’s seeking the ultimate hack for a smooth, smudge-free red lip.
For the girl who’s thinking of launching her own business from scratch, and wants the tea on how to change the game.
For the musician-obsessed who believe beats and breathwork can exist in the same track.
See you soon!
